Project overview

Storco partnered with Safeguard Self Storage to deliver a new single-level facility in Ruakākā, located two hours north of Auckland. The site is strategically positioned just off Port Marsden Highway to serve the growing Marsden City and Marsden Technology Park precincts, making it a valuable addition to Safeguard’s expanding portfolio.

This free-standing building was designed specifically for self storage, with Storco providing the building structure, full interior fit out, and design consultation. The bold Ebony cladding and Mandarin Orange doors that make up the signature Safeguard aesthetic reinforce the facility’s brand identity and enhance street appeal. A wraparound driveway provides access to ample drive-up units and facilitates easy vehicle flows throughout the site.

The build program for Safeguard Ruakākā was 38 weeks from pre-construction to handover.

Building structure

Safeguard Ruakākā facility is a greenfield development, purpose-built to meet the operational needs of a high-volume self storage site. The building features 4-metre high parapet walls at both ends, offering generous real estate for exterior signage and brand visibility.

The exterior cladding in Ebony is paired with Mandarin Orange roller doors, creating a striking visual identity that aligns with Safeguard’s established brand. The wraparound driveway is wide enough to accommodate two vehicles side-by-side, ensuring smooth traffic circulation and convenient access to drive-up units.

Especially notable is the way the external mullions sit over the lip created between the building slab and the surrounding driveway. The driveway was designed to slope away around the external mullions; this is to meet the requirements of New Zealand’s building performance code E2 regarding external moisture. The stepped design of the mullion, along with the sloped driveway, provides drip protection to help prevent water ingress under the cladding.

Storage fit out

Inside, the facility features Storco’s V5000 Gloss White corridor system, which enhances lighting and creates a clean, modern aesthetic. Mandarin Orange unit doors continue the Safeguard visual identity throughout the interior. Corridor protection is provided by two rows of aluminium buffer rail.

The interior roller doors are 2100mm high and the swing doors are 2230mm high. The partition walls are topped with heavy wire mesh for additional security.

The fit out was designed to maximise net lettable area with units ranging from 4m² to 18m² to suit the needs of a range of customers.

Storco’s design consultation ensured the final layout met Safeguard’s operational needs while delivering a premium customer experience.
